It is hard to specify exactly what genre Larry Roth’s new book can fall into. Political, frugal living, gay rights, taking care of the body and more are covered in Political Frugality - Guerrilla Economics for the Demonized, Devalued and Disenfranchised. Larry was a high income-earner who gave it up to be a relaxed gardener; he exercises, eats right and lives frugally. This retired professional walks-the-walk, and raises several interesting points of view on society and communities. Discussions on how we dictate each other’s belief system to one another without even realizing what we are doing were definitely thought provoking. Larry also brings to light the unrealistic discrimination that still slides in and out of our daily lives - and we find this normal. I found the author’s ideas on social security just fantastic. When you think about it, where does our money go if we die early and are not married? For that matter, why should the spouse left behind be penalized by receiving only a portion of the mate’s coverage? Larry also makes some excellent arguments for the benefits of walking. It can be so much more than frugal and responsible transportation, exercise and meditation - it can actually bond communities. How? I can’t tell you here, you’ll have to read the book to find out! | December 24th, 2008 | Gilleland Poetry: A Book Review |
For me, poetry is often too obtuse and difficult for me to get into. Whether it is the abstract metaphors, or difficult line structure, I end up struggling more than I would like to. And if I struggle too hard, I don’t stay with a book of poetry very long. Some poetry, though, finds a way to wade through the muddy brack and pour out a clear, clean glass of poetic water. Harry Gilleland, Jr., is one such writer of poetry. Gilleland has recently written two books”Gilleland Poetry: Storoems and Poems,” and “Bob the Dragon Slayer” (a short novella). “Bob” is an engaging read, funny at times, and enjoyable to any person of any age who wants to spend an evening or an afternoon in a world of knights, dragons, and damsels who are rescued from despair. In his other book, “Gilleland Poetry,” the author sets out to engage us in his ponderings of the intricacies of life. We think, feel, laugh, and cry as Gilleland tells us the truth about life in poetic or “storoem” form. (A “storoem” is a “hybrid between a story and poem”a story told in poetic form. Gilleland’s goal is to provide his readers with poetry that makes them think, but he also wants to be an entry point for those who don’t enjoy poetry. As such, his poems are very readable and accessible to all who would pick up his book. One example of his style is the poem, “The Epiphany,” which is about how inner change is much more momentous than a mere epiphany might suggest to us. We should be careful of making strong declarations of change, and make change more of a journey that we progress on each day. “Again the wife was told that he was working late. / In truth his night was spent in heavy drinking and / in whoring, ending at the beach passed out in the sand.” The poem then relates an epiphany the man experienced, seeing the error of his ways, and he declares to God that he should be struck down dead if he is not truly a changed man. The poem ends thus: “His body washes up on the shore later that same day. / ‘Some shark sure surprised him. Wonder why he was / swimming here anyway?” the coroner was heard to say.” Gilleland’s poems and “storoems” teach us simple but profound truths through the clarity of his style. | December 17th, 2008 | Learn about the Holiday with Thanksgiving Trivia |
Growing up in my house (as a kid) was a barrel of laughs; especially when my father was around. To this day, one of the best standing-jokes around our family get-togethers is the vast “knowledge” my dad holds on basically any topic. My younger brother sums this up well when he tells how my dad once told him he could do brain surgery by simply watching a documentary on the subject. That’s my dad. His brain is so full of somewhat-useful “facts” that time spent with him is always an experience. This holiday season, I’m sure we’ll all hear our fair share of thanksgiving trivia and the like. Barrels of laughs will ensue. When I was a kid, there was a very specific hierarchy to the holidays. Of course, positioned at number one was obviously Christmas, followed by Halloween, and rounding out the top three was the Fourth of July. To me, these were the big three. As for my current favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, it was only a day where many of the family ate a lot of turkey and watched football. Yes, thanksgiving for kids (at least for me) is not a huge deal. Over the years, my outlook has changed. Thanksgiving represents much more than food and football. It truly is a day to be thankful for all we have. This is why I try to make every day have a bit of Thanksgiving in it. |

| December 15th, 2008 | Book Review - The Harbor Light |
Download Software Don’t Hide Your Light Book Review - The Harbor Light by Eric Walls Reviewed by Lisa M. Hendey Kids face a variety of challenges growing up in today’s complex world. Media role models and pressure from friends to “fit in” seem to come at an ever earlier age. As parents, we are challenged to equip our children with the tools to stand up for the things they believe in and to make right choices. In his new book The Harbor Light (Kregel Kidzone, January 2006, hardcover, 32 pages) author and animator Eric Walls introduces a loveable new character, Lighthouse. Like today’s average kid, Lighthouse wants to “fit in”, to have friends, and to be cool. But he also carries some pretty major responsibilities: it is his job to shine his light, day and night, as a safe haven for all to see. Lighthouse knows his duties, but faces isolation, temptation, and peer pressure from others. He wants friends and popularity, but he may have to hurt others or turn his back on his duties to attain this. As the story unfolds, we see Lighthouse’s choices, and their results, in an exciting story that ends up teaching us a big lesson. Kids of any age will enjoy this lively new character and will benefit from the important life lessons presented. We each possess a “light” within, and a responsibility to share that light with those around us. If we hide our light, we hurt ourselves and others. By teaching our children to recognize and to share their light, we pave the way for their happiness and ultimately for helping them to be the best people they can be. With a little help from Lighthouse and The Harbor Light, life’s challenges and temptations may seem just a little easier to understand and navigate. | December 14th, 2008 | IZEE “Growing Up In A Logging Camp”: Reality Intertrude Insert Between Ch1 and Ch2 |
Reality intertrude As MS (multiple Sclerosis) is doing such a fine job of devastating my mortal body, I thought it prudent to begin writing my life story. At least, to recall some parts of it that have had significant impacts on me becoming who I think I am. If I wait for someone else to write it - I won’t be around read it. If I delay any longer to begin, I may not be able to remember my life - at all. I suppose that it’s normal to want people to say nice things about you, after you’re gone. Sometimes, you can make a deal with them to say nice things about you - if you will just go. Since I don’t have very much to cut a deal with, I figure - if I want some nice things said - I’d better say them myself. I’m reminded what I once said about a dog that I had. ” He never bit anybody…” I don’t remember ever biting anyone, either. Another dog, I adopted, kissed everyone. Although I tried to do that, too, I was never as well received as he was. Cats don’t try to kiss you. They spend all of their time licking themselves. A lot of people that I’ve met do that. While many things are yet within their power to accomplish, they give up. I’ve learned, there is nothing shameful about trying and failing. It was only a shame when I failed to try. We all get to have our share of failures. No one else gets to have them all. If you’ve never failed, you have probably never tried to do the impossible, like be a good marriage partner, or eat soup with a fork. I get better at being married each time I try it. In this story, I don’t think I’ll change the names. No one is so innocent that they need protecting. * * * Izee continued We moved to Izee early Saturday, to the house we had never seen the inside of. Mom was following in the car, Dad commandeering a borrowed pickup with all of our earthly possessions. Robert came with us to Izee, this time. Since Mom would be explaining to him “The boardinghouse rules” for high school away from home,” I rode with Dad thinking it was funny that my brother got to eat more dirt than I did, as they followed us over the miles of unpaved road. Like a filthy phantom from planet dust, Robert kept emerging from the 52 Ford, recovering anything that blew off our loosely tied down load. He looked even scarier when it started to rain. | December 13th, 2008 | How eBook Publishers Can Cash In On Seasons, Anniversaries, And Special Events |
The RIGHT books can be great sellers at the RIGHT time of year. Note the word RIGHT because certain times of year are notoriously unkind to the mainstream info products seller. The run up to Christmas, for instance, typically brings little demand for business opportunities books which often fare better just after Christmas when credit card and other bills land on the doormat and tempt the individual to look again at ways to regenerate his fortunes. Summer, too, with holidays on the horizon, creates a feelgood factor that outweighs worries about boring old things like bills, work and money. When the cold months return though, it’s a different matter, there’s little to do now but work out ways to make money for next year’s travels …… and then there’s Christmas closing in …..! Generally speaking, January to June and September to November, are kindest to anyone selling business opportunity and other moneymaking titles, including marketing, investing in stocks and shares, building a property portfolio, making money at auction. So what happens in between, how does the specialist seller of business opportunities and moneymaking books survive the leaner times? The answer is he either makes enough during the good times to cover the bad, or he finds something additional to sell with all-year-round or seasonal appeal. Let’s look at seasonal appeal today. SEASONS, ANNIVERSARIES, SPECIAL EVENTS - A MARKETERS’ DREAM COME TRUE! Seasons, anniversaries, special events - some of universal interest, like birthdays and family celebrations, others with a high market following, like Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ Day, Crufts Dog Show, 100 years since someone famous died or something important happened, and so on, and so on. And so on! The benefits of focusing on seasons, anniversaries, special events, are many and include: * High Niche Market Potential. At Christmas, almost everyone thinks Christmas, and much the same goes for Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween. The result is niche markets that last just a few weeks, sometimes just days, but they’re potentially most profitable of all. * History Repeats Itself. Seasons and anniversaries come and go, and what you learn one year will benefit coming years’ endeavors. You’ll learn which ads to repeat and which to bin, which media to focus on and whose advertising sales reps. to cold shoulder, while all the time building a list of enquirers and buyers for future promotions. * Great Research Potential. Every season, anniversary and special event comes with ready made ideas for you to copy next time round. Be careful, however, and learn to distinguish between legal and illegal copying of other people’s ideas, products and intellectual copyrights. When you know the distinction, buy as many advertising publications as possible for your target audience, visit web sites, save marketing emails, compile a huge swipe file of print and online marketing ideas and initiatives. Especially product ideas. * Sense of Urgency To Buy. Most seasons, anniversaries, special events, are of limited duration and people know if they don’t buy soon, the ads. will quickly disappear. There’s a sense of urgency attached which forces people to buy NOW, unlike non-time-sensitive promotions which might be put to one side to study later, and promptly forgotten! * All-consuming Passion. Virtually every season, anniversary, special event has a huge audience of followers, and usually buyers, too, of theme-related products and services. At such times of year, the occasion fills MOST people’s minds, MOST of the time! * Nostalgia. The most popular seasons, anniversaries, special events, have been spoken about, filmed, written about over many years, sometimes centuries, so a mass of research material exists which can itself form the basis of your product. More than this, history itself interests today’s readers, so you could create a product based purely on the background to a particular season, anniversaryor special event. Take virtually any publication and you’ll find the Christmas edition of issue one to forever includes articles, ideas, snippets of useful information, jokes, puzzles, pictures, and more, which can be lifted untouched (out of copyright items or with permission only), or adapted (by rewriting, paraphrasing, not plagiarising) for your info products. * Niches Within Niches. Many very profitable market niches exist within already seller-friendly niches. Cat lovers for example, and Elvis fans, are highly responsive buyers within other profitable markets, such as Christmas where books, calendars and diaries come bearing pictures and facts about most popular subjects, including cats and the King. * Free Publicity. Opportunities for low-cost, no-cost marketing are great, as for example where a book about James Dean was launched on the anniversary of his death and sparked countless television and media mentions through carefully timed news releases about the book. * Media Self-Promotion. It’s a well-known fact that few writers specialise in seasons, anniversaries and special events, so editors are frequently short of features around those special times and will welcome articles, fillers, photos, cartoons and other printable matter in exchange for a write up about your products.
