April 30th, 2009 What Makes a Lloyd’s of London Risk Analyst Write a Novel?

2005 ended with news networks recalling the natural strife caused by oceans warming and plates crashing together. One of the people whose job it was to analyse the risk of such events to people was Afshin Rattansi, whose debut quartet about life in London is publishes in 2006.

Already lauded by some of publishing’s top names, it looks at four aspects of London life but it is perhaps Rattansi’s past as a risk analyst that informs some of his writing. The title novel, The Dream of the Decade, is about the fall from grace of a cipher for all those who work in the City. The second concerns the threat of terrorism, the third the importance of owning property in the UK capital and the final volume is a panorama of London life seen through the eyes of a young trainee journalist.

In the early nineties, Rattansi examined 20th century risk data that spanned everything from you bumping your car to the prevalence of hurricanes like Andrew and earthquakes like California’s Northridge disaster. It is in the minutiae of probabilities that “The Dream of the Decade” shines. For as it examines the relationships of ambitious and not so ambitious characters, each trying to make sense of a life in London, the reader emerges with a kaleidoscopic vision of themes, images and feelings that encompass the city in the 90s like little of contemporary fiction.

One of the risks that Rattansi analysed at Lloyd’s was that of war and though this is a book about the 1980s and 1990s so there is no Iraq, his look at the haphazard way a news network covers the Yugoslav war of the mid-1990s is salutary. The remove of journalists to the “ordinary” people who are the majority of the book could not be clearer. Though women tend to do better then men, financially, they are portrayed as grasping of something outside the average humdrum and as people who identify life’s opportunities with more verve.

In the novel about property, in a cramped house split into two because of the boom in prices, a gun shop owner lusts after a florist as the protagonist of “A Taste of Money” worries about his affection for the florist’s daughter. This is the locale of a man worrying about working in property redevelopment as his boss dreams of the aspirational life of magazines and colour supplements. The quartet is full of such miniatures even as it seems like the best curated of London galleries.

“I can still feel the force of it. ” Christopher MacLehose, Collins Harvill.
“He captures the atmosphere of the late 80s.” Dan Franklin, Martin Secker and Warburg.

April 29th, 2009 Chapter Seven Bankruptcy

There are two options for filing bankruptcy as a single person or married couple, chapter 7 and chapter 13 bankruptcy. Chapter 7 is often called liquidation as all of your property that is not exempt is sold in order to pay off your creditors. Exempt property is that property that the government allows you to keep in order to live your life normally, like a auto, clothes, furniture to sit on, etc. Each state has their own bankruptcy exemptions, as well as a set of Federal exemptions that can be used in some states. In order to qualify to file a ch 7 petition, have to be an individual, not a business or farm, you must have completed a credit counseling course from an authorized agency within the 180 days before filing for ch 7 bankruptcy relief, and pass the means test which is completed with your bankruptcy petition. In a chapter 7 petition, you will have to file bankruptcy forms that list your creditors, property, household income and bills. Copies of tax returns, pay stubs and credit counseling certificate will also have to be filed. Married bankruptcy filers must provide the spouses information even if they are not filing bankruptcy together so the court can determine your ability to pay the debts. When filling out your petition, you will have the option to continue paying and holding onto your property if you are able to, such as your home or automobile, by making a reaffirmation agreement with the company that holds the debt. By reaffirming the debt you are acknowledging that you intend to make payments. If the trustee grants your reaffirmation agreement, the creditor may be able to call you to collect the debt in the future. When you file your ch 7 bankruptcy petition you will have to give a filing fee of $299. This fee can be paid in installments, up to 4 no later than 120 days after filing. Once filed, the bankruptcy stay is in effect, creditors cannot call, collect or file lawsuits. Each of your creditors will be notified that you have filed bankruptcy and yielded a chance to respond. Within 20-40 days a 341 meeting will be called. During this group meeting, the creditors and trustee can ask you questions. The trustee then rules on the presumption of abuse of your case. If your case is presumed to be abusive you will be given a chance to refile under chapter 13.The bankruptcy trustee is then responsible for liquidating your assets that are not exempt, meaning they are not protected by filing bankruptcy, and giving the proceeds from the sales to your unsecured creditors. Once liquidation is completed, you are granted a discharge wiping out your debts.

April 27th, 2009 Graduation Diplomas For All

Graduation Hats

Graduation hats are the hair dress items that the graduates wear on their graduation ceremony day. They are made of square horizontal board hence they are fixed on the skull cap. The hats have their tassels or the liripipe fixed at the center. They are also referred to as cap, square or motor board. The graduation hats are black in color together with their tassels and their top should be flat. However, the tassels can be of a different color like gold. This is particularly if they are for the executives for instance the chancellors or the principals. All the hats have an elastic portion for the addition of grip as well as comfort.
There are some graduation hats that are handmade and this is to measure the hard skull mortal and the soft skull hats. Bonnets are the standard traditional hats that have tassels with different colors to meet the requirements of different institutions. The tassels are supposed to be hanged on the side. However, this differs depending on the level of study. The undergraduates do not wear on the same side with the graduates. For the graduates they prefer hanging their tassels on the left while the undergraduates hangs their tassels on the left side. There are some other graduation ceremonies where the student wears their tassels one side up and these only changes when they go for the reception.

April 26th, 2009 Title: Casting Off

Dumpy blonde, 30 something Megan Barry orphaned at an early age and raised by her grandmother feels as though life may be passing her by. Determined to not marry one of the local men and live the life of a fisherman’s wife while equally determined to not go to work in the local fishery Meg worked first as a waitress at the local luncheon counter. Other than a six year relationship with a local married school teacher, a potential joining with clumsy gardener Jimmy Dooley and dime novels gotten from the Beara Penisula Mobile Library; Scullymore, Ireland did not have a lot to offer in Meg’s opinion. It was when she had packed her suitcase and set out for the bus that Meg was offered a job by Connor Gorman the local wealthy patron.

Killgorman house sits on a knoll at the edge of town. Gorman’s fiancée Helen Featherstone seems determined to prove her position as the lady of the house when Meg peruses a copy of ‘Sloop Skippers Notes,’ before seizing a chance to escape from her humdrum life. A purloined key, a weather driven adventure at sea, and an illegal still all figure in the tale. How Megan ends up alone on an island with only a gull for company comes before a surprise offer of affection and a new job offer.

Writer Trisha FitzGerald Petri has produced a festive, fast paced read on the pages of Casting Off. Megan Barry is not the characteristic fanciful heroine, she is however a very acceptable, and agreeable personality. In an eruption of witticism and style FitzGerald Petri paints a keenly focused anecdote filled with excellently masterminded settings, quick-witted plausible characters and exceptional conversation all set against an environment of sea and tumult in this rollicking tale.

The reader is drawn into the tale from the opening paragraphs. We taste the sea salt, feel the spray against our faces and grip the rails of the yacht as we, and Megan, ride out a horrific storm. Connor Gorman is a man we can enjoy coming to know, his fiancée Featherstone is quite the opposite. Reader interest is held tight in this easily read adventure from opening lines to the epilogue. Conflict is present in good measure and is suitably resolved.

Included is a glossary of Irish expressions and Gaelic words… although writer FitzGerald Petrie’s description writing leads little confusion as to meaning for the words used.

An excellent choice for the home pleasure reading shelf, high school library and those who like a good adventure with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure Casting Off is a delightful read for a long summery afternoon or an autumn evening spent reading and sipping cocoa.

April 25th, 2009 Guide to Obtaining a #1 Ranking in the Search Engines: eBook Review

When it comes to optimizing your site for search engines you basically have two choices: You can hire someone, with experience, to do it for you, or you can learn the basic principles of search engine optimization and do it yourself. If you choose the do-it-yourself route, then it is necessary to have some proper tools or written information if you want to do optimize your site properly and not spend months learning search engine optimization by trial and error.

There are various kinds of software and guidebooks which claim to be able to help you get top rankings in the search engines. Just as it would be a waste of time to learn SEO by trial and error, it would be equally inefficient (and a big drain on your pocketbook) to read all the guidebooks that are out there. You can save time and money by getting Ryan Allis’s new book, Guide to Obtaining a #1 Ranking in the Search Engines. (http://www.a1-optimization.com/allis.htm)

Allis offers a step-by-step easily understood method. His advice is based on sound optimization practice, and avoids “tricks” that will get you in trouble with search engines. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you will find something of interest in this ebook.

Allis takes you through the process of keyword selection, and then optimizing pages with these keywords, and explains where and how to submit the pages. Most importantly he takes into account on-page and off page factors that will affect your ranking. On page factors are such things as keyword-density (how many keywords you have compared to your total text), properly written metatags, page structure, file-naming and your site’s link structure. Off-page factors include link popularity, the quality and quantity of incoming links to your site. These days it is becoming very difficult to generate traffic to your site if you do not have a good amount of quality, incoming links. Allis shows you how to get these links, in the guide itself, and in a free companion book.

His basic optimizing strategy is to build a content-rich site, with a lot of articles and pages about the theme of your product or service. A large content-rich site is useful because each one of these pages serves as a mini-website attracting searchers looking for various aspects of your offerings. Also, the more content you have, the higher the page ranking and the better the placement your site will get in search results. This is a crucial factor if you are in a very competitive category.

The ebook is only around 40 pages, but its brevity is its strength. You will not get bogged down or suffocated by information overload. But if you are thinking that all you have to do is read a 40 page book and then you will get top rankings in the search engines you are dead wrong. Allis, like other competent people in this field, warns that in order to get a top rankings you will have to put in many hours of work and wait several months before you get results. If you have the time and interest to do-it-yourself, plus a reasonable command of the basics of site-building and maintenance, then Allis’s “Guide to Obtaining a #1 Ranking in the Search Engines” is a must-read ebook for you.

April 23rd, 2009 Opting between

Hoards of people will need to select between filing financial insolvency or allowing their mortgage lender to foreclose their home. If monthly or bi-weekly mortgage payments are not received as scheduled, the bank may file a foreclosure on the property. You may disrupt the home foreclosure process by paying the mortgage lender as scheduled. Home loans are much similar to automobile loans; if you do not pay your monthly payments you might get it repossessed. Foreclosure is the same for all who have not been able to pay his or her house loan, the bank will start foreclosure proceedings.

Insolvency proceedings are a legal action registered by somebody who is not able to pay her debt. If the debtor is in the process of bankruptcy then all current civil legal proceedings associated with the home loan are put on hold. Legally, a mortgage bank has to cease all collection processes, including foreclosure. A home loan lender may ask for relief from the automatic stay period, and once it is granted, may go on with the foreclosure process. Bankruptcy will not halt foreclosure and you still must pay back your loan. Bankruptcy only makes the process proceed slower, it will not solve the original problem.

Even though insolvency does not end a foreclosure totally, it could give a person enough time to pay back the overdue amounts or at a minimum it will make it tiny bit easier to repay a lender. Insolvency proceedings requires a home loan to freeze foreclosure actions, a mortgage payer will have a short time to raise the cash necessary to pay the creditor. It is the final option for any debtor to file for financial insolvency when the debtor is totally incapable of to satisfying their lenders’ terms of repayment. With insolvency, some debts will in all likelihood be discharged but the mortgage will not be cleared. The borrower has to be willing to repay the real estate loan within the mandated time as the debt is secured by tangible assets. Additionally, Chapter 13 bankruptcy has a pay schedule that will be court-ordered, that lets the home owner make payments on her real estate loan to get up to date on their mortgage payments.

Before the home owner can file for bankruptcy, they must meet the conditions. If they do qualify, there will be legal fees. It might cost more in legal fees than if they were to just buckle down and make your mortgage payment. If you are thinking that filing for bankruptcy may be a solution to the problem, a bankruptcy lawyer will probably be able to answer whatever questions you have. Because insolvency proceedings are really complicated, the home owner really ought not attempt to do it without help from a a lawyer.

This is not legal advice. Contact a bankruptcy lawyer in your state for bankruptcy advice advisement.

April 23rd, 2009 Understanding and choosing a domain name

A domain name is basically a succession of characters that are entered into a computer as part of a website, URL, or an email address and then looked up into the global Domain Name System, which informs the computer of the IP address with that name.

Domain names are actually hostnames that provide names that are easier to remember to stand in for numeric IP addresses. They allow any kind of service to move to a different location in the topology of the Internet, which would then have a different IP address.

By translating numeric addresses to alphabetical ones, domain names allow Internet users to localize and visit websites. Additionally, since more than one IP address can be assigned to a domain name, and more than one domain name assigned to an IP address, one server can have multiple roles, and one role can be spread among multiple servers.

In the Domain Name System (DNS) language, each string of letters, digits and hyphens between the dots is called a label. Valid labels must respect certain rules, which have become less rigid over the course of time. Originally, labels had to start with a letter and end with a letter or digit, (any intervening characters could be letters, digits, or hyphens).

Later, it became permissible for labels to begin with a digit (but not for domain names to be entirely numeric), and for labels to contain internal underscores, but support for such domain names is uneven. These are some of the rules imposed by the way names are looked up by the Domain Names System. Some top level domains impose more rules on some labels, such as a longer minimum name length. Fully qualified names (FQDN) are sometimes written with a final dot.

Having to conform to so many regulations, choosing the most appropriate domain name and the preferred generic name isn’t always easy. Before buying your domain name, you should take in consideration several aspects:

- The best thing to do is to choose your site’s name as the basis of your domain name. The main advantage of matching your site’s generic name to the domain’s name is that it will be much easier for your customers to find you.

- Choosing the most suggestive generic name for your site is great, but most of them may no longer be available. However, selecting a domain closer to your market segment will definitely cut down the competition.

- Hyphenated Names are less likely to be already registered and therefore, they are a good option. The problem with hyphens is that they are more difficult to remember, considering the fact that customers are more likely to remember your name, not your URL. Therefore, hyphenated names should be used more carefully.

- If the .com or .co.uk extension is not available then consider the alternative TLD (Top level domain types) such as .net or .biz. You should consider this possibility, as your desired generic name might not be registered on other domain types.

- Sometimes, a domain name is free in the plural but not in the singular form. It’s up to you whether you choose a plural or a singular form for your name, but if your preferred choice is unavailable, you might be stuck.

- When your preferred domain name is not available, it’s always worth trying altering the domain name a little. You should try to modify the domain name by adding a prefix, a suffix, or other variations.

- Try to choose a shorter domain name. It will be easier to memorize, although less likely to be available. A longer domain is harder to remember, but can contain more keywords. As many search engines use keywords as part of the search algorithm, you should consider adding more keywords to your domain name.

- Any available domain type acts the same, and search engines don’t do preferential searches. A search engine finds keywords in all domain types. For example, it will make no distinction between a .com or a .co.uk domain.

By following these few steps in choosing your desired domain name and by properly matching the generic name of your site to your business, you should be able to increase and maintain the interest of your costumers and cut down competition.
