‘Running cards,’ in a hand of poker, refer to the fact that a player needs a very specific turn and river to come down in a given hand in order for them to win the pot. For instance, a poker online player needs two cards to make a straight against their opponents aces, or two more cards of a suit to make a flush, etc. Another example of needing running cards would be having Ace Queen against Ace King and the board reading K 8 9. In this case you could win with running Q Q or with running jack ten, but otherwise you will lose the hands. Needing running cards means you are way behind in the hand and are against the mathematical odds to winbut it’s not impossible. Having backdoor poker draws to straight and flushes do crop up and win. Backdoor draws make up a small percentage of a player’s chance to win, and can add extra outs when the right card comes on the turn. Another term for needing ‘running cards’ is needing ‘runner runner.’ Or if you needed, as above, two queens to come, you would need ‘running queens.’ Doing your best to avoid needing runners is a pretty smart play, if you can at all help it.
