The town of Hayling Island contains the hamlets of East and West Hayling and lies within the Portsmouth and S.E. Hampshire region. Hayling Island is a prime location for clean beaches and holds two blue flags and Tidy Britain seaside honours; it is the premier position for some of the optimal sailing and windsurfing in the UK. Hayling Island is a traditional coastal resort that has suffered as a result of the decline of the traditional seaside holiday. Salt production was an industry on the island from the 11th century (the Domesday Book recorded a saltpan on the island for this purpose) until the late 19th century. At the northwest corner of the island lies the Hayling Oysterbeds Local Nature Reserve. Hayling is the consummate base for a family vacation, being within easy touring distance of Portsmouth, flagship of Maritime England, the New Forest and the South Downs. The Hayling Island Kitesurf School was set up in 1999 by Chris Bull, one of the pioneers of kitesurfing in the UK. In the 1830s a guide to Hayling said ’such is the health of this sweet island that although a medical man resides here, his services are seldom in request’. There is plenty going on in this little idyll of an Island If you were to come to Hayling island then a special place to dwell would be Cockle Warren Cottage Hotel - it is precisely on the seafront and you will be wrapped in the enamor of the cottage with the warm sea air knocking on your chamber windowpane.
