Effective Advertising and Info Management

March 5th, 2010 This Week on Legal Online Poker

This week on legal poker online advocate’s Right2bet blog, German lawyer and supporter of gambling deregulation, Martin Arendts, talks about poker gambling law in Germany, which is currently managed through a series of monopolies by the 16 ‘Lnder’ (or states) in the country. Whilst the initial move to state companies was seen as reasonably successful, these companies have recently seen a large dip in profit, having consequences for public spending above and beyond what would be the norm in a commercial market. This has resulted in many states believing they can make more from taxing a deregulated industry full of private operators.

The other issue Germany has, according to Arendts, is that each of the 16 states has different rulings and it may prove difficult to operate a commercial market in one area, with a monopoly operating in the neighbouring state. Some of the Northern states encompass only cities (Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin), so one could find that they live in a ‘no man’s land’ or are able to take advantage of better prices simply by walking down the road.

Surprisingly, given the excuses of the monopolies regarding fighting corruption in sport, one of the biggest voices in favour of the liberalisation of the industry comes from the organisation most affected by recent ‘match-fixing’ scandals. The German Football association’s president Theo Zwanziger and representative Franz Beckenbauer have both been quoted as believing the transparency of a fully legal, liberal system to be far more attractive than that which current laws allow. Indeed, Arendts believes that by 2012 the country will have moved away from state poker monopolies, towards a liberalised industry in which multiple private operators compete and pay tax.

December 22nd, 2009 Playing the Cutoff Too Freely

I was recently watching a free poker video from a pretty well known poker online player. He was 4-tabling different buy-in 180 man sit and go events. While the stuff he was talking about was very basic and great for a beginner, I found most of it to be rather useless. But, while he was discussing a hand on one of his online poker tables, I saw him play a hand differently than I might have played it, yet it went unmentioned. In the cutoff, he folded A-7 off with about 10BB’s in an unopened pot. This isn’t a huge deal, and in fact, it’s probably right on the border of a fold or a shove. My first instinct would be to shove and hope to take the blinds, or even get called by one of the blinds or the button who is putting you on an “any two cards” cutoff shove. The big thing that I took from this is that I, and perhaps many good players, might be treating the cutoff too much like the button when it is not. It’s relatively the same, but if you’re not shutting the hand down, you could get in a lot of trouble just flat-calling to be in position on an opening raiser. While the shove might be a marginal situation (trying to get through 3 players instead of 2) a flat call in front of a solid button player can be throwing chips away. This leaves the button to take the play away from you preflop or anywhere later in the course of the hand. Know the difference between the cutoff and the button and you might just patch a small hole in your game.

November 24th, 2009 Keeping Reins on Your Habit

Like any good thing, it is easy to get addicted to online poker. With the widespread access of a game at all hours online, and the easy to signing in even from your bed on a laptop, certainly the presence of poker online has skyrocketed in the last 5 years from an entity restricted to home games and casinos, to any bedroom in the country.

In the face of this great blessing, it is important still, even for the most regular of professional players, to keep the game within the confines of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you are addicted to the thrill of the game, to the money you make, or to simply the act of seeing one hand after another, don’t forget that there is a world outside there with people in it. Breathe. Eat. Walk. Read. Have a life.

I say all this from the perspective of having gotten so addicted to the game myself that I stopped thinking about anything else but the casino. I played all waking hours of any day, and stopped hanging out with friends or doing anything else beyond the game itself. Sure, I made money, and my skills improved, but generally I got so deep into the game that I lost sight of all else.

Remember that work is work and play is play, and at the end of the day, too much of anything will eventually catch up with you.

July 17th, 2009 Poker Terms: ‘Runner-Runner’

‘Running cards,’ in a hand of poker, refer to the fact that a player needs a very specific turn and river to come down in a given hand in order for them to win the pot. For instance, a poker online player needs two cards to make a straight against their opponents aces, or two more cards of a suit to make a flush, etc. Another example of needing running cards would be having Ace Queen against Ace King and the board reading K 8 9. In this case you could win with running Q Q or with running jack ten, but otherwise you will lose the hands.

Needing running cards means you are way behind in the hand and are against the mathematical odds to winbut it’s not impossible. Having backdoor poker draws to straight and flushes do crop up and win. Backdoor draws make up a small percentage of a player’s chance to win, and can add extra outs when the right card comes on the turn.

Another term for needing ‘running cards’ is needing ‘runner runner.’ Or if you needed, as above, two queens to come, you would need ‘running queens.’ Doing your best to avoid needing runners is a pretty smart play, if you can at all help it.

March 31st, 2009 Another Lawmaker Attempts to Ban Online Gaming

More disturbing news from the anti-online poker front, as an overzealous politician wants to deny the good people of the Philippines the right to play online poker. As reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer: A lawmaker has proposed that gambling on the Internet be made illegal in that country.Alliance for Rural Concerns party-list Representative Narciso Santiago noted in his proposed legislation that there are no existing regulations on Internet gambling in the Philippines (which is a good thing).Santiago’s bill proposes to make it illegal for people running a gambling or online casino operation to use the Internet or any other interactive computer service to place, receive, or otherwise make a bet or wager; or send, receive, or invite information that may assist in the placing of a bet or wager. He also said there is a danger that gambling sites may be used in scams to trick people out of their money. This is of course completely false, as online gambling sites should not be equated to Nigerian phishing scams or some such thing. This is just another example of a crooked politician who wants to deny people their God-given right to play online poker. I am hopeful that this bill, and other bills like it worldwide, will be defeated and we can all play online poker in peace.

You probably know where to find a game, the basics behind play, and how to make sure that you are playing on a full pay table.
Most video poker machines will make suggestions about what cards you should keep, and that is exactly the trouble. Most players are distrustful of this; after all, the casinos are out to make money. Why would they give you tips that would let you win? Well, you don’t have to worry anymore; the tips offered on machines are generally good advice. The casino wants you to win every so often, that is what keeps their customers coming back. May 14th, 2008 Tips for planning a retirement party

Throwing a retirement party should be just as fun as planning a retirement party. A retirement party should be a big thank you for an employee’s long term hard work and dedication. Understanding the person’s personality is the key to planning the perfect party. You don’t want to single out a person that doesn’t like being the center of attention. If the person loves begin the center of attention then it is ok to hold a roast consisting of a large group of people for that individual. Understanding the person’s likes, dislikes and personality is the most important thing you can do to plan the perfect retirement party for that person.

You will need to create budget. Food, drinks, venue and entertainment are all equally important. When panning the perfect retirement party you should center everything around the honoree’s interests, hobbies, activities and passions. You can plan a basket ball game or some other type of fun activity. You should strongly consider whether planning a surprise party or not. A surprise party might really bring the occasion together if it fits the honoree’s personality. If a surprise party doesn’t fit the person’s personality then planning a surprise party might ruin the entire party. So be very care when considering whether or not a surprise party is right.
