What is the connection between music and the brain? Is it possible that music can help you think better? The research says yes, and after telling you about some of it, I’ll let you in on an even faster way to boost your brain power with music.

Music And The Brain - The Research

The research shows that music actually trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Listening to, and participating in music also creates new neural pathways in your brain that stimulate creativity. An article in a Newsweek (2/19/96) reported on a study from the University of California.

In the study, researchers followed the progress of three-year-olds, split into two groups. The first group had no particular training in, or exposure to music. The second group studied piano and sang daily in chorus. After eight months the musical three-year-olds were much better at solving puzzles, and when tested, scored 80% higher in spatial intelligence than the non-musical group.

Brain Music

A study on music and the brain, done at UC Irvine’s Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory involved 36 students. They were given three spatial reasoning tests on a standard IQ test.

Just before the first test, they listened to Mozart’s sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448 for ten minutes.

Before the second test, they listened to a relaxation tape.

Before the third, they sat in silence.

The average scores for all 36 students: 1st test: 119. 2nd test: 111. 3rd test: 110.

That’s an average increase of 9 iq points from listening to Mozart. It’s assumed that their intelligence didn’t increase, but that the music put them in a state that gave them better access to the resources of their brains. However, other studies do show that repeated exposure to slow music can permanently increas you IQ, so play that Mozart!

Brain Wave Entrainment

Your brain wave frequencies vary according to the state you are in. For example, daydreaming and meditation usually take place in the “Alpha” range of frequencies. Alert concentration is in the “Beta” range. “Brain wave entrainment” products have beats, usually embedded in music, that your brain starts to follow.

If you listen to music containing beats at a frequency of 10 Hz (in the Alpha range) it will feel very relaxing. This is because your brain will begin to follow this frequency and reproduce the rhythm in the music. You’ll generate more brain waves at a 10 Hz frequency and enter a relaxed Alpha mental state. This is the idea behind brain wave entrainment.

This may be why some types of music have certain effects, but not all brain wave entrainment Cds use music. Some use the raw “binaural beats” as they are sometimes called, embedded in white noise, or in sounds of nature. (I have used these products and find them to be pretty powerful , especially the ones for relaxation.)

Whether you use “binaural beats,” or just pop a Mozart CD into the player, you can increase your brain power easily. Try it today. It is doubtful that Mozart will harm you, so why wait for more research to be done on music and the brain?

We have been experiencing an intense focus on “wellness” for
close to a decade now, but it seems little has been done to
really improve health and well being in this country.

Many corporations have gotten on the bandwagon as a way of
adding value to the employee package and hopefully limiting
health care costs. Some programs include onsite medical care and
bag lunch classes on nutrition and exercise. Very progressive
programs may have lifestyle consultants or personal coaches. But
most merely house onsite exercise equipment that employees may
use in spare time.

Unfortunately, these elements do little to improve overall
health and well being except for the most avid and health
conscious employees. Why? Because physical condition and
nutritional intake is only a small part of the whole person.

The number one killer in this country is heart disease. Yes,
food and exercise play a part in maintaining health. Obesity is
a health issue. But a major cause of heart disease as well as
many other chronic and deadly illnesses, is chronic stress. How
many people even know exactly what stress is and what it does?
The fact is, if strenuous exercise is the only solution used for
stress, it can be deadly.

Wellness programs would be much more effective if employees were
given concrete information regarding stress, what it is, how it
impacts the body and mind, and what they could do about it.

Employees would benefit from understanding that the source of
their stress is not lack of exercise, but emotion resulting from
real life problems. Problems including relationship conflict,
finances, parenting, life/work balance, negative thinking, and
other issues cannot be solved merely through meditation,
relaxation, exercise or a hot bath. Stress producing problems
must be solved and they can be eliminated. They are the source
of life-threatening chronic stress.

Most of us struggle with one thing or another. If finances are a
problem, a better solution is to find an expert who can help us
reach financial health. If relationship conflict is a problem,
it is more helpful to find a coach or therapist to teach
effective relationship skills and move us toward relationship
health. If you are stressed due to lack of time, it is more
helpful to learn time management skills and balance your life.
Most of us weren’t taught these skills growing up. We cannot be
expected to know what we never learned. But we can be expected
to identify and find solutions to our own stress related
problems.

I see this all the time with clients who come in with
depression, anxiety, anger management problems or other stress
related issues. In some cases these individuals work out
religiously and have healthy eating habits.

One such client, a single man I’ll call Tom, was employed by a
company with a wellness program. Equipment was available but
little focus was put on individual employees. Tom had stomach
surgery scheduled due to intense pain that doctors could not
diagnose. He gave up coffee, alcohol, and spicy foods. He blew
up frequently at work and had few friends. Anger, negative
thinking, and isolation cause stress and are hazardous to your
health.

that brought him immediate relief and helped him relax. With
coaching support he was able to move on to deeper learning and
personal insight. After only a brief period of time Tom was a

April 9th, 2008 Practical Spirituality: Surviving the Negative Path in Spirituality

In our last article we spoke of the first path of Creation Spirituality. The first path was Via Positiva. In this article we will discuss one of the less popular, but essential paths called Via Negativa. This is the path that is often celebrated in religions as a time for letting go. This time for letting go takes place right in the midst of our positive experience. Everything is going great. We are positive and well balanced, and then tragedy. We find ourselves on the Via Negativa. The Via Negativa is painful. It stops our joy and makes us begin to let go. We let go of our thoughts and beliefs about people and the world. We often let part of ourselves die, so new thoughts, ideas, and personality traits can be born. If we pass through the Via Negativa correctly, we become stronger, if not we become devastated.

The Via Negativa in life can be compared to the painful part of body building. When one works out lifting weights it is often a painful process. One has to push and struggle a great deal if they want the most benefit from the workout. One strains and often gets sore. The reason weight lifting is painful is because we are actually breaking our muscles down with every lift. Each day, after the workout, the body works to rebuild the muscles. That is what makes them bigger and stronger. If there were no breakdown there would be no rebuilding.

In our lifetimes we often come upon situations that work the same way on our mental and spiritual aspects. They break down old, frozen behavioral patterns and shake them loose. It is also painful. As a result of this painful process our minds, like our muscles, expand and become stronger. Going through via Negativa gives us strength and courage. It is like death and then resurrection. One must die before he or is resurrected. We must suffer loss and sorrow, pain and mental torment in our lifetimes at times or we will not grow.

Since we are going to do so at one time or the other during our lifetimes, why not take the opportunity to build Via Negativa into our spiritual lives. Why not think of the pain and sorrow that others are experiencing. Why not mourn for those who are oppressed and grieve for our own loses. We can do this as we meditate, as we pray, as we celebrate, so we will always be cleansing ourselves through the Via Negativa, and growing into more powerful, well rounded individuals.

As we come to terms with Via Negativa, and if we can realize the beauty and growth that is growing to happen in the midst of the suffering, we can rejoice and hasten the next path in creation spirituality, Via Creativa. We will discuss this path in the next article.

The path of via Negativa hardens us, it strengthens us, and promotes growth. It is the power of Shiva who dances worlds in and out of existence, or the power of Yahweh who says that he is the bringer of joy and sorrow in the Book of Job. If you are going through a Via Negativa period right now, just hold on. Hold on by realizing that when you come out of this path to the next one you will be stronger, more intelligent and adaptable. You will then move on to the path of Via Creativa, the path of resurrection from the grave.
