Effective Advertising and Info Management

January 8th, 2009 Linking to the Best

Be picky about who will link to you; shoot and scatter does not always work.

Just having a website is not enough to get yourself noticed. You will need to do a number of things in order to have your site better known. Here are three ideas that you may want to use.

First, find another business that is a good fit for what you do, and have your information displayed on their site; you will probably also need to display their information on your site. Do not just pick any site to exchange information, make sure they have the same business values as you. I personally do not use other sites unless there is value in it for both parties.

Second, make sure you are active in newsgroups such as Yahoo Groups in your area of expertise. Newsgroups are not a place to tout your business but they are a place to give free advice and get yourself known in the process. Just make sure the group you join and the advice you give fits in with your business model.

Third, you will need to have your website address printed on everything, and I mean everything you give out. The website should be on your business cards, letterhead, envelopes, brochures, white papers, articles you write, on all your advertising materials, on donations, and any business listings. Besides promoting yourself on the web, you need to promote the web on everything you do. You want to drive people to the site to learn more about you and what you do. Just make sure you have a separate website for each line of business.

Some people sell goods on their sites and join a group such as the Commission Junction. Commission Junction allows you to choose what other products you will sell by placing a banner on your site. You can also place your goods in the listings for others to choose. You will not make a great deal of money this way but it is an avenue for selling products.

September 21st, 2008 Some Easy Ways to Increase Web Site Traffic

In this age when website traffic is important, it pays to find ways to increase your web traffic. After all, the more people that go to your site, the more likely you are to sell your products and services. In that regard, here are some ways that you can increase web site traffic.

1) Find a small number of forums, and post frequently. Discussion forums represent a number of opportunities to the shrewd businessman. Besides giving you a chance to network with those of a like mind, you can also get advice and, by giving advice and participating in the various discussions, you gain a decent reputation. Also, they generally allow you to post some basic coding in each post at the bottom of each post (called a signature). If you gain a good reputation, then other posters will click on any links placed there. A minor way to increase web site traffic, but a rather nice way to garner some good will.

2) Charity works. You want to increase web site traffic, which means getting your URL in as many hands a possible. One of the most effective ways to do so is to get your name in the paper, preferably in positive way. The best way to do this is to find a charity and do some work for them. Besides being able to use this in press releases, you may be able to get the charity to list your name and URL on their site. PBS membership drives are excellent in this regard, especially if you get corporate sponsorship. Sports leagues, especially Little League, are even better.

3) Check into online directories and free advertising sites. Directories are sites that tend to gather URLS and make them available to anyone that goes to them. However, be careful when choosing a directory; most are great at helping you to increase web site traffic, but a number get so little traffic themselves that they are basically a waste of time. Also, free advertising sites are great, as they tend to be popular, at least on a local level.

There are other ways to increase web site traffic. However, these are some great fun ways to do so. Good luck!

September 18th, 2008 Link Exchanges for Website Promotion

Why Should I Exchange Links?

Links brings interested visitors and potential customers to your website. Links also help in increasing your popularity and are helpful in gaining better search engine positioning as search engines lay great emphasis on link popularity. The World Wide Web is a huge network of websites and it is impossible to browse the web without appropriate links. By displaying links on your website and by getting your link displayed on other websites, you are helping expand this web.

Types of Links

Links discussed here are of two types:

1. Text Links: A written description of your website, with a hypertext link to your site.

2. Graphic Link: Banners or buttons hyperlinked to your website.

For many reasons, text links have an advantage over graphic links. Text links do not take any time to load and are quickly indexed by search engines.

The first thing you need is a good text link. A good text link is one which describes your website, its content, products or services in a simple and easy-to-understand manner, in minimum possible words. Write out a simple, yet effective copy for your text link. It is advisable to keep 4-5 different texts ready so that you have different text links all over the web. Exactly similar text links on many websites may cause you to get banned from certain search engines.

Where to place links?

Ideally, you should have a separate page for links or resources which should be linked to, from your index page. It is not advisable to place links on your homepage as we do not want our visitors to click on links and leave our websites as soon as they enter!

Finding Sites to Exchange Links With

Link exchanges are most beneficial when websites are of similar nature. For example, if you sell handbags, a customer looking for handbags on another handbag website is more likely to be interested in visiting your website than a customer of a website selling drill machines. Here is how to find the appropriate websites to exchange links with:

1. Search for websites on search engines. Type in the main keywords of your business (for e.g. handbags) and you will get a list of websites in the same industry. Visit their websites and see if they have a ‘links’ page. That page will also contain information on how to request a link exchange.

2. If you find a ‘links’ page on a website, take time to visit all the websites that are linked. If those websites have exchanged links with the website you are visiting, they are sure to be interested in exchanging links with other websites i.e. yours.

3. On your own ‘links’ page, mention info about how people can request link exchanges with your website. Mention a specific email address where they can contact regarding link exchanges or use a contact form. You will start receiving link exchange requests and it will be up to you to decide which websites are worthy of linking to.

4. Ask for link exchanges in the message forums and newsgroups you visit regularly. Owners of similar websites will be glad to respond.
